Saree and Skin Color

“Should a white girl wear saree?” – This question usually arises because of the look of saree on a white woman and on an Indian woman. Asian, especially Indian women, have a brownish skin tone. That’s why they can pull off the most vibrant of colors without looking out of place. But when a white woman wears the same color, she is sometimes considered tacky.

However, the main thing is that not every saree is of bright red or yellow color. There are many variations and shades of saree. The same color may appear differently depending on the textile of the saree. For example, yellow gives a shiny bright shade on silk saree but looks a bit matte on handloom saree. So, choosing the right color and textile of saree can make it look perfect on any white woman. Additionally, pastel colors or muted tones can be a wonderful choice, offering a sophisticated look that complements fair skin tones beautifully.

Can a White Girl Wear a Saree?

Of course, a white girl can wear a saree. She can wear it anytime, anywhere, and on any day. There is no right or wrong place/time for wearing a saree. The only consideration should be the color and textile of the saree.

The main thing you need to carry off a saree is your confidence. If you are confident that you are looking good and can carry the look, then go ahead and wear a saree. Start with lightweight fabrics that are not slippery, such as cotton sarees. They are great for beginners and perfect for hot, humid weather. It should be noted that experimenting with different draping styles can also enhance your appearance and comfort, allowing you to find the most flattering look for your body type.

Why Do Indians Look at White Women Wearing Saree in India?

Women from the west have often complained that Indians gawk at them when they wear saree in India.

The reason is: Most Indians look at white women wearing saree simply to admire her. Yes, that’s the truth. Indian women’s skin tone is generally darker than that of western women. So, when they look at a fair-skinned western lady donning their traditional wear with elan, they often look in admiration and pride. Moreover, it can also be a cultural curiosity, as seeing someone from a different background embracing traditional attire can be quite fascinating.

What a White Girl Should Not Do While Wearing a Saree

  • The first thing is to make sure where you are wearing a saree. If you are planning to visit tourist places while wearing a saree, then choose a simple printed saree. Do not choose one that is heavily embroidered, however beautiful they may look. Heavily embroidered sarees should only be worn during a festival or some other occasion such as marriage.
  • The second thing is never go overboard with jewelry. If you are just visiting places, then a few bangles and/or a beautiful yet simple set of earrings would be perfect. You can also wear a simple necklace. However, always reserve your heavily ornate jewelry for special occasions such as festivals or weddings.
  • Western girls love bindi. Not only western girls, Indian women too love to adorn their forehead with bindi. But always remember: never go overboard with bindi. Don’t stick bindis all over your forehead in the name of style. That just looks plain awkward. A simple bindi looks much more appealing with a simple saree. Ornate bindis are also available, which can be worn with heavily embellished sarees.
  • The last thing that you should keep in mind is that never wear a saree in which you feel uncomfortable. Everyone can sense that you are not feeling comfortable in your attire, which in turn hampers your confidence. Wear a saree only if you feel like it. Or else take inspiration from Michelle Obama and wear a skirt/dress in Indian textile just like hers when she visited India in 2015. This way, you would flaunt both western and Indian culture and feel confident at the same time. Additionally, exploring fusion styles that blend western and Indian elements can create a unique and personalized fashion statement.

"The Sari, it is said, was born on the loom of a fanciful weaver. He dreamt of Woman. The shimmer of her tears. The drape of her tumbling hair. The colors of her many moods. The softness of her touch. All these he wove together. He couldn’t stop. He wove for many yards. And when he was done, the story goes, he sat back and smiled and smiled and smiled.”

He said "woman". Not Indian woman, not white woman, not black woman. Woman.

I love your comment Kayla! I'm a Gori married to an Indian man living in CA. I had the privilege of wearing a Saree at his nephews wedding last year. I have been obsessed with them ever since. We are going to India in October and I can't wait to wear them again. I'm thinking of wearing one to our office holiday party also. I don't know if anyone has opinions on that?

I am super Gori! White, freckles, blue eyes and red hair. I started wearing sarees after my M.S started acting up in the heat (I live in California) . The saree has its own insulating system that you can change with a couple different pins and drapes! This is amazing for me. Part of M.S is extreme temperature intolerance to cold and hot. I don't have to carry (key word, CARRY. Numb hands, painful arms) jackets, umbrella for shade etc. I can go to the bathroom and repin my saree, or just drape the saree over my head (instant sunscreen!!)! I am also petite. I have to wear children's clothes at times (I am 31, I don't want to wear kids clothes!) The saree is literally one size fits all. You can wear the same saree at 105lbs, to 180lbs, and during pregnancy! That is spectacular! Last but not least, many are very light. Jeans are heavy. Even our dresses are heavy in comparison to a georgette or chiffon sari (even art silk!) How awesome is a saree?!? I say wear it. Anytime, any place. Us wearing it accepts it is indeed clothing and not a 'costume.' Leaving it only to festivals and parties deems it either 'costume' or 'ball gown'. And that is only 1/1,000,000 of what the saree really is :)
