The first thing to do before you paint your nails with water is prepare and protect them by applying a base coat. Then, for the best water effect, paint your nails with a white base or other light-colour that goes with that you have selected for the nail art.

Then prepare a glass of water to carry out the nail art and choose the colours of nail polish that you like. You can select two, three or as many as you want. We have chosen three shades of blue to show you how to paint your nails with water.

Once you have prepared the glass and selected your colours, cover your fingers with tape to prevent staining them with polish. This step is very important because you have to put your fingers in the water and if you do not cover it well they will be completely stained. Surround the entire nail with tape.

Then take one of the polishes and place a drop a drop into the water. You will see that the colour extends and you can barely see the colour. Do not worry, it is normal. Take another polish and drop another drop on top of the previous one. Repeat this step with the polishes you want as many times as you want, the more drops, the more colourful your nails will be.

When you have all the drops in water, take a toothpick and make the design you want. You can try to make flowers, stars, hearts, etc., or simply draw abstract forms as we have done ourselves. You see, this is a totally different way of painting nails but very simple.

You can put the amount needed for a single nail, or expand the drops to fill the glass for all the nails. Once you have the design, place your nail onto the design and as the nail is submerged in water, take the toothpick and remove the remaining polish surrounding the finger. Then, take the nail out of the water.

Will a clear polish work as a base coat?
OneHowTo Editor
A clear polish doesn't have the same properties, which won't protect them from fungus that may build up having applied so many layers through this method.
If you don't have any it's best no to apply the base coat, though you should remove the water nail polish after around a week.
Hope this helps
