Would you like to make grapefruit essential oil at home? Follow this step by step article from OneHowTo where we explain the easiest and most effective way to make grapefruit oil naturally.
Grapefruit essential oil is obtained from the peel of grapefruits, so to work, we must select two grapefruits that have a fairly firm and smooth skin. In addition, you'll need extra virgin olive oil and a bottle or glass jar with a lid. Once you've gathered the ingredients, get to work!
The first step to make grapefruit essential oil at home is to wash the grapefruits to remove any dirt or debris that may be there, wipe them with a clean cloth and take off the skin with the help of a knife or a peeler. You will see that on the inside of the skin, there is a light whitish layer, which must be removed by scraping it with a knife or with a small kitchen grater. You just need the grapefruit skin for the oil, so you can remove all the whitish part of the rind.
Then, place a pot or pan on the stove and fill it halfway with water. Allow it to warm and then it's time to add the grapefruit peel. Wait about one minute and remove from the heat. You will see that the water has been colored slightly but it is not need so you can dispose of it.
To prepare the grapefruit essential oil and get the end product we're looking for, you should use a water bath technique to ensure the mixture is heated evenly. This technique is essentially placing a smaller container inside a larger container full of hot water and then heating the mixture in the smaller container to insulate it from direct heat.
The process is very simple, first fill the bottle or glass jar halfway with extra virgin olive oil and then add the grapefruit peel. Close the bottle with the lid and shake it vigorously so that both ingredients mix well together.
Finally, you just have to heat the container of grapefruit and olive oil in a water bath. Put a pan of water on the stove, introduced into this the glass jar and let the water bucket reach the boiling point; thereby transferring heat to the bottle smoothly and steadily. You should let it warm up for two hours to obtain the essential oil.
After this time, remove the pan from the heat and let the jar with grapefruit oil stand in a cool place free from humidity for at least 24 hours. Then you only have to pour out the contents of the bottle - preferably in to smaller dark glass bottles - so the grapefruit essential oil is kept in perfect condition for longer.
By following these steps, your grapefruit essential oil is ready to use. You should know that this is a very popular oil in aromatherapy and in the world of beauty due to its multiple properties that give us beneficial uses. These include:
