How to do Tiger Eye Hair at Home

There is always a new hairstyle trend in town capturing the interests of celebrities and beauty gurus wanting to switch up their look. "Tiger Eye Hair" may look like a simple balayage; but in true essence this hairstyle delicately combines caramel and brown highlights for a more decadent finish. Inspired by the name of a stone, this ombré hairstyle lookalike works elegantly on brunettes, adding onto their natural chocolate tones some sweet and warmer touches.

In this oneHOWTO article we explain how to do tiger eye hair at home.

You'll need:
  • Hair dye (different tones)
  • Gloves
  • Old T-shirt
  • Vaseline
  • Hairdryer
  • Color protective shampoo and conditioner
  • Comb and other hair tying accessories
Steps to follow:
1

Learn the technique. Getting "Tiger Eye Hair" requires a bit more practice and learning than a usual balayage. As opposed to adding blonde highlights to the bottom ends of your hair, with this new hairstyle you essentially want to combine different lighter and darker brown tones to mimic the effects of the Tiger’s Eye gemstone.

2

Choose dye tones. To be able to create the different brown tones you may need at least two different hair dye products within the same color range. If your hair is on the darker side, look for lighter tones. If your hair is on the lighter side look for two darker tones.

3

Do an allergy test. Before you begin make sure that you have made an allergy test and test the products on your skin beforehand. This is important since everyone responds differently to every product and you don't want to fall in for the most common hair dying mistakes.

4

Prep your dyeing space. To begin to do tiger hair at home, make sure that you are wearing an old T-shirt and that you have all your supplies ready in your bathroom in a safe place.

5

Prep your skin. Then, apply some Vaseline around the edges of your face and ears to prevent staining your skin with hair dye and tie your hair up in a bun leaving the lower layers of your hair untied.

6

Apply first layer. Now, put your gloves on and prepare your coloring mixtures. Very slowly, grab small strands of hair and using your fingers add some coloring to your hair leaving the top section uncolored. Work gently, massage and blend well.

Alternate colors. To achieve the "Tiger Eye effect", make sure you alternate between the two (or more) coloring products that you have. Once the lower layer is done, pull down some of your hair and repeat the process. Use layers of foil if necessary, though the trick in Tiger eye hair is that there is not that much contrast or definition between both colors.

8

Apply heat. Before rinsing your hair out, apply some gentle heat with a hairdryer. Be careful with this step and don’t wait too long to wash your hair. The longer you keep the product on, the more intense the color will turn out.

9

Apply special shampoo. Finally, use color protective shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair, then dry and style as you wish.

10

This hairstyle is suitable for brunettes. If you have blonde or red hair you can still get this trendy look; yet you may want to dye your hair to a brown color first and then apply the warmer caramel tones.

11

For red highlights. Additionally, you may prefer to add some red highlights later as you start to get used to this hairstyle and the brown tones start to blend in smoothly into your hair. You will be surprised to see all the rich and beautiful hues that one can find in the Tiger’s Eye gemstone.
