To make chamomile oil at home and take advantage of all its beneficial properties, you first need to have the necessary ingredients and materials. These are:

  • 1/2 cup of chamomile flowers
  • 250 ml of virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of vitamin E
  • 1/4 tablespoon of rosemary oil extract
  • 2 small glass bottles with lids
  • Chopping board
  • Small plastic funnel
  • Colander
2

We recommend buying dried chamomile flowers in a specialist health food shop. If you're using chamomile flowers that you've grown yourself at home, you need to have picked them earlier so that they have time to dry up before you use them - you can read about how to do this here. This is important, because moisture in the oil may cause mold to form.

You then need to clean the chamomile flowers by removing any dirt, spread them out on a cutting board and leave them until they dry completely.

The next step is to sterilise a small glass bottle by soaking it in boiling water for a few minutes, and then letting it dry. Then pour in some olive oil until it's approximately 3/4 full.

Add the chamomile flowers to the olive oil and stir until all the flowers are completely covered and soaked in the oil. Once you've done this, place the lid on securely.

5

Place the glass bottle somewhere it will receive direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day. Check the bottle every day by carefully taking off the lid and drying any moisture on it with a paper towel. Then put the lid back on and shake vigorously. Wait two weeks for the mixture to settle.

6

After two weeks, pour the chamomile oil into another sterilised glass bottle. An easy way to do this without spilling any oil is to use a funnel, and use a strainer to filter the chamomile flowers and remove any residue.

7

Finally, add the rosemary oil extract and the vitamin E to the chamomile oil, and stir well so that all the ingredients are fully mixed together. You've now got your chamomile oil ready to use. You can use it straight from the bottle, and don't forget to keep it somewhere cool, but keep it free of any moisture so that it doesn't ruin the oil.

Can I use argan oil to make it?

Hi,

Yes you can, but it might be a waste given how expensive argan oil is. Plus, argan oil is great on its own for various uses.

can I use another carrier oil , like coconut oil instead of olive oil
OneHowTo Editor
Hi Kathy,

Coconut oil will work, but it will have its own scent and properties which may overpower the chamomile. Olive oil is less aromatic which is why it is suggested.
