When fighting acne, it's important to know how to treat this skin condition and to follow the advice of your doctor and dermatologist. However there are plenty of ways you can fight acne at home, using natural remedies, acne masks and by making changes to your lifestyle and diet.

One thing we can do to improve symptoms of acne is to follow a balanced diet rich in nutrients that can help. In this OneHowTo article, we explain some tips and tricks for how to prevent and reduce acne by changing diet and eating different foods.

Preventing Acne with a Balanced Diet

  • Diets to combat acne should be a balanced diet.
  • Rich in fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink lots of water to be well hydrated.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol which exacerbate the effects of acne.

Eliminate Acne with Carotenoids

In a diet to fight acne, it is very important to include foods rich in beta-carotene, which are converted into vitamin A which has antioxidant properties. It also performs the function of controlling the excessive production of sebum, one of the causes of acne.

Some foods with more beta-carotenes are carrots, spinach, apples, asparagus, tomatoes, broccoli, basil, pumpkin, etc.

Using Omega 3 to beat Acne

It is also recommended to eat foods with omega 3 fatty acids, which help dissolve sebum and prevent keratinisation. These also have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce lesions caused by acne.

To do this, you will need to incorporate foods rich in omega 3s like many kinds of fish (salmon, cod, anchovies, sardines, etc.) and seafood, vegetable oils (soy, flaxseed, canola, etc.), wheat germ or nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc.), among others.

Vitamin B6 to Regulate Hormones

To regulate the levels of hormones involved in the development of acne, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is very beneficial. Lacking this nutrient results in many of the most common skin problems.

You can choose to eat liver which contains high levels of vitamin A, as well as chicken, blue fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, etc.), soy, whole grains, etc.

Zinc Helps to Combat Oily Skin

Furthermore, to help control the production of oil of the skin and thus control sebum we should use zinc. With a diet rich in this mineral we will stimulate the immunising function, reduce inflammation and maintain adequate hormone levels.

You should do this by incorporating chicken, lamb, turkey, crab, asparagus, potatoes, wheat, etc. into your acne diet

A Good Diet alone will not get rid of Acne

Eating good food is not the only thing we can do to improve acne problems. We can also:

  • Reduce sun exposure.
  • Deep clean the face daily with cleansers or try an acne mask.
  • Hydrate on the outside and inside, and use natural remedies such as honey and lemon
  • Exercise!
