Make a DIY Probiotic Face Mask

Drastic temperature changes, stress, poor sleep and a diet deficient in vitamins and minerals can leave your skin looking waxen, dehydrated and wrinkly. There are many skin care products in the market claiming to give you smooth and glowing skin; but these only target the skin from the surface. It is argued that the body is mostly made of bacteria living in the gut. Our skin layers also host different strains of bacteria. The key is keeping these colonies of bacteria happy and that is why healthy bacteria are making its way into probiotic skin care products.

In this oneHOWTO article we share several ideas on how to make a DIY probiotic face mask.

Oily or acne-prone skin

Probiotic face masks may be best suitable for people suffering from acne breakouts or excessive oil production. Many people already argue that taking a probiotic daily, helps clear their acne. However, we can go one step further and apply the power of probiotics directly on the skin.

To make a DIY probiotic face mask you will only need a few ingredients. The most important one is a good quality probiotic. Some of the most praised brands are Prescript-Assist, Country Life or MegaSporeBiotic, though you can also substitute it with another probiotic such as yogurt or kefir.

Ingredients

  • 2 probiotic capsules
  • 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey

Preparation

Mix all the ingredients and apply to your face gently. After 30 minutes, wash off and pat dry.

Jojoba oil is recommended to balance oil secretion and both turmeric powder and honey have strong anti-inflammatory compounds.

Dry skin

There are very different strains of bacteria that may result in different skin conditions. Just because your skin is very dry that doesn’t mean that you have less bacteria on your skin. Instead of making your probiotic face mask with purifying ingredients you want to switch them for nourishing and moisturizing ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 probiotic capsules
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey

Preparation

Mix all the ingredients and apply to your face gently. After 30 minutes, wash off and pat dry.

For dry skin, we recommend richer and thicker oils such as olive oil or avocado oil. The latter is high in Vitamin E, which is a potent anti-aging compound. Honey will help seal in the oils for added moisturizing effects.

Mature skin

Many products for mature skin use many chemical ingredients that only hype up the price without offering a solid guarantee that they work. The skin is the largest organ in the body and so you may want to make sure you are applying safe, natural ingredients on your skin.

Ingredients

  • 2 probiotic capsules
  • 1 teaspoon of argan oil
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey

Preparation

Mix all the ingredients and apply to your face gently. After 30 minutes, wash off and pat dry.

To bring back your skin to life and prevent skin aging effects, lemon juice will add a strong dose of Vitamin C, which is argued to help fight back free radicals. Also, argan oil moisturizes the skin while helping repair previously damaged or bruised skin.
