How to Make your Converse Look New

Converse shoes or Chuck Taylors, as they are sometimes known, became famous in the 70s. Today, they're still fashionable, especially among adolescents and young adults. Those who have had these shoes for quite some time, may find they no longer have the same attractive and sporty appearance that they did before. This is why at OneHowTo we want to show you how to make your Converse look new again.

You'll need:
  • Bucket
  • Baking powder
  • Detergent
  • Bleach
  • Toothbrush
  • Liquid Chalk
  • Sponge
Steps to follow:
1

The first step you need to take in order to make your Converse shoes look like new is to remove the laces of your Converse shoes. Place the white laces in a bowl full of warm water with 1 tablespoon of bleach and 1 tablespoon of commercial detergent. If the laces are colored, place them in a container filled with warm water and add 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent.

2

Stir them around by hand and let the laces soak for 10 minutes, depending on how much dirt is on them. Dry them outdoors.

3

Next, sprinkle 2 or 3 cups of baking soda into a small bucket and fill halfway with hot water. Pour a small amount of dishwasher detergent into the bucket and stir the mixture with the end of the toothbrush.

4

Dip the toothbrush in the bucket. Rub the front of Converse shoes until the dirt is removed. If your Converse are white, take a look at our article on how to clean white Converse fabric.

5

Insert the shoes into the washing machine and set on a low cycle. Add 1/2 cup of laundry detergent before starting the wash cycle. Refrain from using a bleaching agent to avoid staining your Converse shoes. Adjust the cycle to a cold wash.

6

Leave the shoes to dry somewhere away from excessive heat.

7

Apply a small amount of liquid chalk to whiten certain patches of the shoe. Follow the complete instructions on the packaging for better results. Wipe the rubber sole clean with a wet sponge.

8

Iron out the laces to ensure they're spick and span. Adjust the tongue of the shoe so that it sits right.

Tips
  • Choose laces that fit properly according to the eyelet of the shoe. Shoes with seven pairs of eyelets should have laces that measure around 110 centimetres. Eight pairs of eyelets should be matched with laces measuring around 140 cm. Nine pairs of eyelets should go well with laces that measure 160 centimetres.
