How to Make Sage Essential Oil

Sage is an aromatic plant with many health applications, this is why it is very popular in aromatherapy. It is a powerful antiseptic, healer, astringent, digestive and laxative and is great for seasoning. It also lowers blood sugar levels, perspiration and milk production when nursing, among other properties. At OneHowTo.com we explain how to make sage essential oil so you can start taking advantage of its many benefits.

Steps to follow:
1

It's very simple to make sage essential oil, you only need the following ingredients: sage leaves in sufficient quantity and above all freshly cut so that they let off a more intense juice. You will also need base oil, this is a personal choice but those that work best are sesame, coconut, almond or olive oil. The most recommended for its softness and its smell is almond oil. To store it you will need an airtight glass jar.

2

There are different ways to make sage essential oil but we recommend hot maceration because it is the easiest and because the oil concentration is much higher and more effective.

If your sage leaves are wild you will first have to wash them thoroughly with water and then let them dry in the sun for about 2 hours. The leaves must be very dry before mixing with the base oil. If they are not fully dry try to leave them out some more. Then chop the leaves and place them in a jar. Crush them well to get the necessary scent.

3

While the chopped leaves are pressed in the jar start heating the base oil without letting it reach boiling point. Once the oil reaches the correct temperature pour it into the jar until it covers the sage leaves, but without excess.

Then let the mixture sit in a dark and moist area. There should be no exposure to sunlight for the oil to form well, you have to be patient and wait between 2 and 4 weeks for the mixture to macerate. Never move or expose to the sun, what you will have to do is occasionally stir with a wooden spoon fro a few minutes.

4

When the macerating time has passed open the glass jar and filter the oil. The best way is to use a sieve and a gauze to remove any remaining substance from the leaves.

Then pour the sage oil into a clean and airtight glass jar. this jar must also be dark to protect the oil from sunlight that can deteriorate it. Store in a place protected from sunlight and heat. It will be ready to use when you want it.
