How to Make Natural Perfume or Cologne at Home

How to Make Natural Perfume or Cologne at Home

Perfumes and colognes tend to be expensive and if we use them daily the bottle empties quickly. A cheaper and more natural alternative to buying commercial perfumes is to develop them ourselves at home, this being much cheaper. Furthermore, this way we can also choose the fragrance that we like best simply by using our favorite essential oil and by recycling one of your perfume bottles. In OneHowTo.com we explain the steps you must follow to make perfume at home.

You'll need:
  • Alcohol
  • Essential oils
  • Glycerin
  • Distilled water
  • 2 bottles or jars
Steps to follow:
1

First, note that the proportions of each ingredient will vary depending on whether you want to produce perfume or cologne, as the former is stronger than the latter, making the fragrance last longer.

2

Although we can vary the formula according to our tastes and preferences, proportions to make perfume at home tend to be:

  • Perfume: 15% of essential oils, 65% alcohol, 15% water and 5% glycerin.
  • Cologne: 5% of essential oils, 65% alcohol, 25% water and 5% glycerin.

It will be easier to start with 100 ml cologne or perfume, so that calculating the measures is more straightforward.

3

The first step to make perfume at home will be to put the alcohol in a jar and add the essential oils very slowly. We can choose the fragrance that we like most: lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, orange blossom, roses...

Next, we will close the bottle and shake it well so the ingredients of the home fragrance are mixed.

5

In another pot mix the water with the liquid glycerin and when mixed, add it to the bottle of alcohol and shake it again. You can buy glycerine at a drug store or large department store.

When we have the cologne or perfume ready we must let it rest for about 2 weeks in a cool, dark place before we can enjoy our homemade perfume.

7

The benefits of making perfume or cologne at home include having a nicer, more natural taste compared to the store bought ones, and not being exposed to chemicals present in commercial perfumes or colognes.

Moreover, homemade perfumes and colognes are much cheaper: you only need some alcohol, glycerin and essential oils.

The only downside is that they tend to evaporate more quickly. We therefore recommend you to put it in a small bottle and carry it with you so that you can apply them several times a day or learn how to make perfume scents last longer.

Here is the recipe our homemade jasmine perfume. It is fresh and sweet, take note!

Jasmine perfume

First of all, get some jasmine petals, cut them and put them in a hermetic glass jar. You can use more or less petals depending on the intensity you want to reach. Then add some 96 degrees alcohol and mix.

Close the jar and let it rest in a dark place for one month. Remember to open it every day and mix well. Now you can strain it and, if you want, add more jasmin petals (letting it rest for a further 2 weeks). Ready to use!
