How to Make Glycerin Soap

Making artisan soaps is an easy task that can save you some money. One of the main types of homemade soap is glycerin soap, although you can also make soap with used cooking oil. You can choose your favorite smell to perfume the homemade soap, which can also be used to perfume drawers and cabinets. In this OneHowTo article, we'll give you step-by-step instructions on how to make glycerin soap.

You'll need:
  • A glycerine bar or liquid glycerine
  • Container
  • Silicone moulds
  • Essential oils
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Utensils to help remove the finished product

Steps to follow:
1

To make glycerin soap, the first thing to do is to gather all of the ingredients and material needed to make this homemade soap. You should have:

  • 1 glycerin bar (available at natural product stores and some pharmacies)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Natural coloring (if you want to give your soap a different color)
  • Your favorite essential oil (such as coconut, lavender, musk, etc.)

Once you have all the material, we can start preparing our homemade glycerin soap!

2

The first step to make glycerin soap is to melt the glycerin. To do so, cut a big bar of glycerin into small pieces and place it in a container. You can either melt the bar of glycerin in the microwave or in a water bath. But remember that you need to use a suitable container that you are only going to use to make glycerin soap in.

You can also use liquid glycerin to make soap. For this you need to heat some water and, when it is hot, but not boiling, add the glycerin so that it dissolves. Consult the manufacturer's instructions to know how much glycerin you need per liter of water. You will be able to find this type of glycerin in pharmacies or specialist shops.

In both cases, you need to stir the glycerin so that bubbles do not form. It is best to stir in circular movements from the top to the bottom.

3

If you wish to add color to the soap, add a drop of food coloring to the glycerin and mix it well so that it takes on the color. You can choose whichever color you prefer to get a personalized design. As this product is basically for aesthetic use (it won't benefit your skin in any way) it should really look aesthetic too.

4

Next, add the essential oils you like the most to perfume the glycerin-based homemade soap. This component WILL add beneficial for properties to your skin as it has its own characteristics, depending on the type of essential oil you choose to use. For example, if you add cinnamon oil you should know that it is used to deep-cleanse your skin, give it moisture and therefore softness, apart from having a sweet and delicious scent.

You can choose whichever you prefer to give your glycerin soap the scent that works best for you.

When you have mixed all the ingredients well, the next step is to pour the glycerin mix into the silicone mold, this step is necessary to get the shape of soap we want. You can grease it with oil to make it easier to remove your homemade soap later.

6

Once the mixture is in the mold, the last step is to eave the mixture to cool and solidify for 1 hour approximately, or until the paste has cooled down completely.

Once it is completely dry, you will be able to take your glycerin soap out of the mold. Do so with your hands carefully so it doesn't break, or you can use kitchen utensils such as a wooden spoon.

You should know that glycerin is a perfect ally for skincare as it has several interesting properties that can improve you skin's health and hydrate it in depth. Next, we're going to specify the best uses of glycerin so you can take advantage of this ingredient:

Natural hydration

It's one of the main reasons glycerin has turned into an unmissable ingredient in our personal care. It acts as an effective moisturizer for our skin, to keep it in optimal condition from the outside.

Perfect for dry skin

As it's a powerful moisturizer, glycerin is ideal to fight certain skin problems such as dry skin, fight wounds, burns and any other type of cut. The reason for this is that when this product nourishes the dermis in depth, it accelerates the healing process and cell regeneration.

Deep cleansing

Apart from the above, glycerin soap will help you cleanse your skin deeply thanks to its antibacterial properties; this allows dirt such to the pores to be cleansed and, therefore, avoids the appearance of acne and black spots.
