Calendula is a plant that has many medicinal and cosmetic properties. Among them are its soothing and antioxidant properties, ideal for skin care and looking amazing all day. A very effective way to take advantage of its benefits is by preparing calendula oil or soap. The latter is also very effective for combating skin irritations, relieving burns and making wounds heal faster. Steps to follow:

To make this homemade soap, you need:

  • Calendula flowers
  • 20ml calendula oil
  • three drops of aromatic essence of calendula to intensify the aroma
  • 350 g (12.3 oz) of extra virgin olive oil
  • 70 ml coconut oil
  • 50 ml of sodium hydroxide
  • 150 ml of water
  • two capsules of vitamin E

Before you start, remove the petals of the flowers and let them dry a bit, use about a handful of petals.


The first thing to do to make calendula soap is to mix water with caustic soda. To do this, go outdoors and use latex gloves for security. Take a bowl, pour in the water and gradually add the caustic soda, stirring the mixture with a spoon or a whisk.

Now it's time for the oils. In another bowl, add olive and coconut oil and mix well. We use coconut oil to give the homemade soap a tougher consistency and to generate more foam. If you wish, you can add another 20 ml of oil, such as almond, to bring an additional scent and moisturizing element to the soap.

When both are well combined, stir in the water and caustic soda and mix them all with a whisk or electric beater. If you have a blender, you can also use that. Beat at medium speed for 10 minutes, until you have a smooth, homogeneous mix.

Now, add the calendula oil and drops of essence and continue mixing. As an optional ingredient, you can add some chamomile tea, especially if you intend to use the soap on sensitive skin, this ingredient will provide softness. When all the ingredients are blended, add the vitamin E capsules and beat some more. Now, add the calendula petals and mix with a spoon or whisk.

When you get a thick, smooth paste, you can pour it into the molds. You can use individual silicone molds or just one big one and cut the soap as you like. As decoration, you can sprinkle some dried marigold petals on top. Now let it dry completely and take the soap out of the mold when it's hardened, this may take a few days.
