The first and most important thing to know is that normal hair dyes are NOT good to dye eyebrows. Dyes that are bought in drug stores and specialist shops have very aggressive components that, although in most cases are tolerated by the scalp, can cause allergies, dermatitis, irritation or peeling.

The skin around the eyes is not as strong and thick as the scalp, for that reason it is more sensitive and can suffer more irritations and allergies than the latter. Nor is it the hair from the head the same as eyebrow hair. Eyebrow hairs are thinner, more fragile and weaker than head hair, so a hair dye can damage the hair on this part of the body. As a solution choose dyes specially developed for eyebrows, these are sold in specialist stores, or a dye for beards and moustaches.

The chosen colour is always important. If we have eyebrows that have sparsely populated areas lacking hair it is best to choose a darker colour to generate a thickening effect. Darker colours look more marked and defined, but don't overdo it because the result will look artificial.

If your problem is that you have very dark eyebrows you and want to lighten your eyebrows, you should choose a colour lighter than that of your hair but with an appropriate tone for eyebrows. Remember that hair does not have exactly the same colour tone as the hair of the head.

Once the right product is purchased, we must be attentive to its the application. You may need to mix several products to get the final paste. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or that of a professional if you have consulted one. Remember to protect the eyes from the dye as these are products that can be harmful. Place a small amount above the eyebrows, ensuring this covers them. You must be precise in the application, trying not to stain the bordering skin. To ensure you do not stain it, apply petroleum jelly or oil on the skin near the eyebrows.

You must leave the dye on for the time recommended on the package. Three to five minutes is generally recommended, and we always recommend the use of a timer, just to be sure! If you remove some of the dye and realise they aren't dark enough, just cover the area again with the product and leave for another 3 minutes or until you get your desired colour. Then use a dry cotton ball to remove the dye.

If it's the first time dyeing your eyebrows, it's best to leave the dye on for a shorter time, and then building up the application if necessary. Don't repeat the operation more times because the dye will dry the skin. If you are not satisfied with the result then try again on the following day so to give the skin a rest and avoid irritation.

Once the dye is removed and if needed you can take the moment to pluck your eyebrows and improve their shape. You must take into account the shape of your eyes. Remember that eyebrows grow fast and that the colour may change rapidly as it grows out. When plucking your eyebrows, try to remember to avoid these common mistakes.
