How to care for a new tattoo

The selection of a good tattoo artist is essential to avoid risks in the tattooing process, but once your tattoo is complete, it is up you to care for the tattoo to facilitate the healing and prevent infections. In OneHowTo.com we give you some tips on how to care for a new tattoo.

Steps to follow:
1

Do not remove the plastic protector. When the tattooing process is over, the wound will be covered by a antibacterial gel and a plastic bandage. You should not remove the bandage in the first 4 hours because it protects it from germs and dirt that can affect it. You should not even lift the bandage to peek at your new tattoo, as germs can enter the bandage and infect your tattoo in even a second.

2

Clean the tattoo after 4 hours After this time, we can withdraw the plaster bandage and clean up the blood; it is normal that tattoos bleed. For that, use an antibacterial soap and cold or tepid water. Do not place the tattoo under a running faucet or shower head, as the water pressure may be too strong. Don't rub or use sponges either. Simply splash on some water with your hands, give a soft massage with your fingers and rinse.

3

Dry your tattoo with a clean towel that leaves no fluff or a paper cloth being very careful to leave no traces.

4

Apply a moisturising cream. The ideal would be to use a lotion especially developed for tattoos, as these favour faster healing, but if you do not have one, use a soft, neutral cream to refresh the area and calm the itchiness.

5

Do not use Vaseline or oils. Although they are two very popular products, they are not recommended.

6

Do not use clothes which may leave fluff on the tattoo. The ideal is to wear a plain and wide fabric item to allow the tattoo to air itself for the first 3-5 days.

7

Avoid exposure to the sun. During the first days you must prevent this completely, then you can start allowing it to have contact with the sun gently. Cover it with clothing or sunscreen.

8

Do not scratch the tattoo It is true that the itching is very annoying, but you must avoid scratching because nails are very dirty and because by scratching, you could pick off the scabs and the colour of the tattoo.
