How to Apply Eyeliner Perfectly

Eyeliner is our favorite make up product for a striking look and for enhancing the natural beauty of the eyes and even correct and improve the shape and size. By simply lining your eyes, you can completely transform your eyes and intensify your makeup look. Of course, to have the desired effect, you need to know how to line your eyes so that they look even and beautifully defined. If you want to learn how to apply eyeliner perfectly to bring out your eyes and enhance your natural beauty, keep reading this OneHowTo article for some tips and tricks.

Steps to follow:
1

Although eyeliner comes in all different forms (liquid, pencil, gel...), we'll focus on liquid eyeliner in this article because it is the most common. Before we reveal the secrets for applying eyeliner to dazzling effect, we should point out that you'll need a steady hand to avoid a black eye. If you struggle with this, we recommend using gel eyeliner for smudge-free, easier application.

If you're not sure what type of line will suit your face, we advise you to check out our article on how to apply eyeliner according to eye shape.

2

When applying eyeliner, you should always start with the upper eyelid and draw a line as close to the eyelash line as you can. Drawing a seamless line is not simple, so we recommend practicing the following trick over and over: Grab an eyeliner pencil and mark a few dots on the lash line along which you'll line with the liquid eyeliner.

3

Then, give the liquid liner a good shake to avoid any clumps and start drawing a line along the upper lid. For a more precise application, we recommend pulling the eyelid up with your other hand whilst resting your elbow on a steady surface to avoid shaking. Next, start gliding the eyeliner along the lash line from the tear duct outwards, joining the dots you made earlier. Do it with short, quick strokes to be able to draw an even line and be able to correct any mistakes you made later.

4

Always start by drawing a fine line and, if you're satisfied with the shape, you can then go back and draw a thicker line if you prefer. If you're going for a very thick line, we advise you to outline the area on both eyes so you get the same thickness and then fill it in, as you can see in the picture.

5

To make your eyes look more awake and fresh, or if you want to enhance their almond shape, extend the line out towards your temple with a slight upward flick.

To do this evenly on both eyes, cut a piece of tape and stick it diagonally next to your eye, draw the continuation of the line, wait for it to dry and pull off the piece of tape. Make sure you stick the tape in the same angle on both sides.

6

Not waiting for the eyeliner to dry completely is a common mistake which can ruin all your hard work. If you aren't the most patient of people and simply can't stand waiting for your eyeliner to dry completely, you could buy some fast-drying eyeliner although you really don't need to wait for longer than a couple of minutes.

7

Now that your upper eyelashes are perfectly lined, you could also line your lower lashes for a dramatic, eye-catching look. However, to avoid looking severe, we suggest using an eyeliner pencil rather than a liquid liner. In addition, using a pencil liner will mean you can be more precise with your application and the product will be less likely to seep into your eyes and make them water. When lining the lower lids, start from the center and work your way outwards, making sure you don't apply it too close to the tear duct.

8

If you follow these top tips, you're eyes will be truly captivating. But, for how long will your perfectly lined eyes last? This make-up product is easily smudged and can often leave you looking like a panda, wit dark shadows under your eyes. To make sure this doesn't happen, you could:

  • Use waterproof or water-resistant eyeliner.
  • Apply your eyeliner after you've applied your foundation and translucent powder.
  • Apply an eyeshadow primer to eyelids before applying any eyeliner.
  • Apply some eyeshadow that's the same colour as the eyeliner.
