Kurta

A Kurta or kurti, is simple traditional Indian attire that can be worn as both formal and informal wear. For everyday use, plain or lightly embroidered kurta can be paired with leggings, jeans salwar, Patiala. For attending an event it’s best to use embroidered or embellished kurta with churidaar or dhoti pants. To make the kurta a bit more desi, add a dupatta. If the kurta is simple then an embroidered or embellished dupatta can up the glam quotient. For a smarter look, you can stitch a Chinese/sherwani collar on your kurta.

Sari

The sari has always been the quintessential desi wear. Some years ago it was made famous on international level when Priyanka Chopra wore a saree for the song ‘Desi Girl’ in the movie Dostana, and many Bollywood starlets such as Sonam Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have followed her footseps in '2 States'.

Right amount of accessories are extremely important to accentuate the desi look. A small bindi on the forehead balances the overall look for formal desi wear. For festivals or other occasions elaborate bindis will work fine. Adding some bangles on one hand or both hands also goes well for these occasions.

Gold, silver, diamond or pearl jewelries are an important component of the desi look. Gold jewelries like necklace, earrings or bangles are available all over India. For a different look you can try matha pattis or nose rings.

Use Maang tikka on your hair and choose a beautiful haristyle to go with your outfit.

Footwear

For a desi look jutis are most essential item in footwear. For saris heels are perfect. Opt for stilettos or pencil heels while wearing sari but never wear wedge heels or platform heels. For kurtis, you can experiment with different heels, jutis, mojris or kolhapuri. The jutis and mojris contain vibrant embellishments and embroidery work of peacocks, flowers, leaves or animals. There are also adorned with beads, glitters, zari work, gota patti and resham work. Choose the one which goes best with your dress and flaunt the Desi girl in you.
